It is the combination of water, light, and air—of meticulously trimmed hedges and lawns, flowering shrubs, and large, shade-providing trees—that creates a very special atmosphere at the Sophienterrassen. The old trees in the park were a real stroke of luck for the overall landscape design concept of the Sophienterrassen. Complemented by newly planted solitary trees, they allow the park to blend seamlessly into the public areas. At the same time, they convey a sense of security and belonging. Nothing here should disturb the idyll or the sounds of nature. That is why the residents’ cars have been banished underground—to an underground parking garage that is just as bright and spacious as the apartments themselves.

The basic design of the small plaza in front of SOPHIE, arranged around a central fountain, has an almost village-like character. Here stands the tree that used to be found in every village square and was regarded as almost sacred: a linden tree. The fountain itself consists of polished granite monoliths, and the paving deliberately alternates between dark and lighter stones to enhance the lively atmosphere of this square. Designed natural elements are also found elsewhere: for example, in a space where lawns appear like islands in a sea of granite laid in a pattern. Instead of fences or walls, hedges protect the privacy of the garden areas and separate SOPHIE from the public spaces without isolating it.
